Refugee Voices is a year-long digital storytelling project designed to record and preserve the stories of East African refugees living her in San Diego. This project is a partnership between the San Diego Central Public Library and the Media Arts Center San Diego. Local teens learn high tech media skills and use library research in order to produce two short documentaries that focus on the lives of East African refugees and their experiences living in the United States. Refugee Voices II is a continuation of the former youth-produced program known as "Refugee Voices: Life Histories of Somali and Ethiopian Women" that produced a video documenting the life histories of three Somali and Ethiopian women, giving them the opportunity to share their stories. Refugee Voices II will continue to raise awareness about the African refugee experience, to help promote cultural understanding and to dismantle existing prejudices. These projects give voice to featured participants and provide instructive models for leadership, community building, and civic engagement. Youth documentation of residents’ life histories strengthens communities by re-building intergenerational ties, training future leaders, preserving life stories, and offers a model to help other communities’ maintain their cultural survival. I am here to tell my story about growing up in California, I was actually born and raised in San Francisco. I've spend my whole life here in California. I grew up in the Fillmore district but I spend a lot of time coming to Oakland. I know that my story is big, the massive movement of African American people from the South to California and other parts reshaped this nation in a way that is huge for the history sake if nothing else. But is different in the way that it shaped the different places that we came from. And in the case of my family, we came to the Bay Area, to San Francisco in particular. At the time I was growing up, Fillmore was like a little Harlem and Seventh Street in Oakland was like a mini Fillmore Street. And growing up in San Francisco and spending a lot of time in Oakland I was doing what young people do. Long before I was old enough I started going to clubs because I always loved the music and I love live music. I grow up listening to people like Bobby "Blue" Bland and BB King. My father was a big Bobby "Blue" Bland fan. My first Bobby "Blue" Bland show I was seventeen years old, he was at New Ruthie's Inn, which was on Groove Street then but its called Martin Luther King now. My name is Patricia Wright, I've been a resident of Oakland for sixty-four years. I am a community activist, I love helping people, and my passion is food and housing. But I am here today to talk about my son, Aswad Hayes. Aswad started in business when he was sixteen years old. And he is been in business for twenty nine years. Aswad was having trouble when he was at school but in the second semester of the eleventh grade he decided to turn his life around and do some good and help in the community, and help himself. He went to college, he went to San Jose State and they have a program there were he went to Paris for six months and did one year in Africa. He studied African Language Literature while he was in Zimbabwe and visited ten countries while over there. He has been in the photography business since he was in high school at Oakland Tech. He started making t-shirts. He started to make t-shirts for the people that had passed in Oakland and buttons also. He started the "Rest in Peace" theme, he started the whole movement. BET came out three years ago and gave him credit for starting the Rest in Peace movement. This was something very stressful because Aswad was involved in so many deaths. There are also a female ice blue zebra, two Labidochromis caeruleus (Electric Yellow), two Metriaclima estherae (Red Zebra), one female Metriaclima Lombardoi (Kenyi), one male Pseudotropheus socolofi (Pindani), three Labidochromic sp. "Perlmutt", one jewel cichlid, and one of unknown specie (I am guessing it's either a male Metriaclima callainos (Cobalt Blue Zebra) or a Metriaclima estherae Blue male; it's too hard to distinguish between the two...).

Two born grandsons (Dad and his cousin Rob, both 4 by Christmas 1964), one prenatal grandson (old enough to pick up outside-the-womb sounds), and two granddaughters (Dad's and Rob's respective sisters, both 2) would've also had enough of a "Ruby"'s influence. This is the second music video I made, back in 1990. It was shot in 16mm at Collins Collision in Detroit, Michigan, and at mcclouth Steel. The Gories were my favorite current band at the time, and I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw them for the first time playing live to about 5 people in a bar in Dearborn, Michigan. They were great for their dynamic performance, and for their unique, original songs, as well as their great choice of covers. I was instrumental in helping Alex Chilton in his efforts to produce their 2nd album, of which this video was for. Mick Collins had already agreed to personify the west-African spirit, Ogun, for my future feature length effort, Wayne County Ramblin', now completed and available at our website; www.waynecountyramblin.com The Gories were supposed to have a live performance in Wayne County Ramblin', but they had broken up long before we began filming. They nearly reunited for a scene, though, for their rendition of 'Ghostrider', with Lorette Velvette substituting for Dan Kroha, who wanted to do it, but had a scheduling conflict that couldn't permit him to be at Wild Bill's when that day came upon us.
