Cuba-born and New York-based saxophonist and clarinet player, Paquito D'Rivera has balanced a career in Latin jazz with commissions as a classical composer and appearances with symphony orchestras. Classical New Jersey wrote, "whether playing Bach or post-bop, D'Rivera's mastery of the instruments and their expressive capabilities is unquestionable". D'Rivera inherited his understanding of music from his father, Tito, a classical saxophonist and conductor. At the age of five, D'Rivera began being tutored in musical theory by his father. Within a year, he was playing well enough to be paid as a musician. By the age of seven, he became the youngest musician to endorse a musical instrument (Selmer saxophones). Three years later, he performed with the National Theater Orchestra of Havana. Although he initially played soprano saxophone, D'Rivera switched to the alto after teaching himself to play via the book, Jimmy Dorsey Saxophone Method: A School of Rhythmic Saxophone Playing. Strengthening his knowledge of music and playing techniques, D'Rivera began studying at the Havana Conservatory of Music in 1960. In 1965, D'Rivera became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. After playing the Cuban Army Band, D'Rivera joined with pianist Chu Chu Valdez to found the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna. D'Rivera served as the band's conductor for two years. In 1973, D'Rivera joined with eight members of the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna to form a band ...

Danny Rivera (born February 28, 1945) is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter who was born in San Juan whose career spans nearly 50 years. He is well-known in Puerto Rico for his political activism.[citation needed] In the 1970s, Rivera had such hits as Jesucristo from Brazilian Roberto Carlos, Mi Viejo (My Old Man) from Argentinian Piero and Vecino, Dame la Mano (Neighbor, Give me Your Hand) from Puertorrican actor/composer Samuel Molina. Another of his hits at those times was "Mi Pueblo" (My People). This song went so deep into the hearts of "His People" that a group of youngsters at the San Juan Airport sung "Mi Pueblo" to him on one of his arrivals from Venezuela. Rivera sported an afro then, and he became one of the first male public figures in Puerto Rico to wear an earring. The hair and the one earring became the trademark of Danny Rivera for many years. During the 1980s, he relocated to Cayey. In 1988, he married model Alexandra Malagon, whom he later divorced. In 2001, Rivera was arrested and incarcerated for one month in a federal prison for trespassing on the military campgrounds at Vieques. He was one of the most outspoken and recognizable anti-military protesters at the height of national protests. His prison diary and poems were published in a book titled "Enamorado de la Paz" ("In Love with Peace") in 2002. He has shared the stage with Julio Iglesias, Will Smith and Plácido Domingo, and he has headlined at the Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall in New ...

Mestre Toni Vargas - O Sorriso Capoeira Song. Imagens: Barra de Maxaranguape / RN Capoeira (pronounced /ˌkæpɵˈɛrə/) is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance. It was created in Brazil by slaves brought from Africa, especially from present day Angola, sometime after the sixteenth century. It was developed in the region of Quilombo dos Palmares, located in the Brazilian state of Alagoas and has great influence on the Afro-Brazilian generations, with strong presence in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. Participants form a roda, or circle, and take turns either playing musical instruments (such as the Berimbau), singing, or ritually sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The sparring is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Less frequently used techniques include elbow strikes, slaps, punches, and body throws. Its origins and purpose are a matter of debate, with theories ranging from views of Capoeira as a uniquely Brazilian folk dance with improvised fighting movements to claims that it is a battle-ready fighting form directly descended from ancient African techniques. Historians are divided between those who believe it is a direct descendant of African fighting styles and those who believe it is a uniquely Brazilian dance form distilled from various African and Brazilian influences. Samba School: Salgueiro - February, 2005. Part 2 of 2. The Grand Champion of the 2009 Parade. It is a truly elitist school that draws in celebrities on name alone. It was, originally among the first schools to show-case the achievements of the Afro-Brazilians, in stark contrast to its current middle-class fan club. Salgueiro became really famous in the 1960s for its outstanding samba dance performers. It has a very popular samba hall. Every year, it uses its symbol, the fire, in its parade. The Rio Samba Parade is the review of a fierce competition between the Rio samba schools. The judges and spectators watch the principal parades in the Sambodromo which was especially built for this event. The Samba Parade is something everybody should experience at least once in their life. The event is broadcast live to several countries. The Rio Samba Parade is very distinctive from all other street parades held at some other places in the world. It is not a street happening where people move chaotically about as they like, but more of a highly orchestrated show of vast proportions. Every parader has a specific role and place according to his costume in a particular wing, of a particular section of the samba school he/she is parading in support of. Each year each school chooses a different theme for the Samba Parade. It can be a celebration of a particular period, or, of famous figures of Brazilian history. It may highlight a special event or speak of anything that might move the ...

Samba School: Salgueiro - February, 2005. Part 1 of 2.

Passo a passo para se retirar o arame de um pneu. Vídeo de Rapharigoti Canal: www.youtube.com Capoeira (pronounced /ˌkæpɵˈɛrə/) is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance. One popular explanation holds that it is an African ...

These groove-meisters effortlessly blend funk, free jazz and Afro-beat with Brazilian and Indian rhythms; the resulting concoction is an alchemy of flavours fused with pure fun and jazzy energy. Fractals soundscapes are playful and colourful journeys over diverse, yet relentlessly groovy terrains. Having made their debut as a trio, the event was Fractal's first time as a quartet, featuring Tony Morrison on tenor sax and flute, Roger Baird on drum kit and hang, Brittany Bowman on six string and fretless basses, and Oscar Robles on guitars, Cuban tres and Chapman Stick. Whether you want to chill to the bone, or dance like a dervish, a Fractal show is a welcome invitation to enjoyment and liberation through all your musical senses. Visit www.myspace.com/fractalfusion. The Chapman Stick (generally known to its players simply as the Stick) is a electric musical devised by Emmett Chapman in the early 1970s. Superficially, a Stick looks like a wide version of the fretboard of an electric guitar, with 8, 10 or 12 strings. It is considerably longer and wider than a guitar fretboard, however. Unlike the electric guitar, it is usually played by tapping or fretting the strings, rather than plucking them. Instead of one hand fretting and the other hand plucking, both hands sound notes by striking the strings against the fingerboard just behind the appropriate frets for the desired notes. For this reason, the Chapman Stick can sound many more notes at once than most other stringed ...

Congo and Moçambique are Afro-Brazilian religious groups that take part in brotherhoods of Our Lady of the Rosary and in their festivals - Congado - in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ahh yes! Capoeira...an Afro-Brazilian art that dates back to hundreds of years ago, this magnificent style of combat combines amazing beautiful rhythm with acrobatic stylistic combat moves! Many years ago, slaves that were brought to Brazil were forbidden from learning combat or anything else, but they created this style which looks like a dance so that their captors wouldn't know that they were practicing martial arts. Overtime, capoeira became known as a dance routine that we now call breakin' and people who dance like this were called 'b-boys'. Nobody would've suspected that breakin' came from Capoeira and sometime during the 90s, this style became widely known, thanks in part to a movie called 'Only the Strong' which was rumored to be the first of it's kind to showcase this amazing style. Overtime though, many films and B-grade movies would showcase this amazing style and rest assured, capoeira has gotten some very good recognition on the silver-screen. So, I put together this little montage as a tribute to the style of Capoeira, the people who practice it and the breath-taking moves that even words can't describe and combined it with a song from one of my favorite video games! Enjoy ya'll and zoom zoom zoom! :)

A group of prominent African Americans, traditionally sympathetic to the Cuban revolution, have for the first time condemned Cuba, demanding Havana stop its callous disregard for black Cubans and declaring that racism in Cuba must be confronted. Among the 60 signers were Princeton professor Cornel West, actress Ruby Dee Davis, film director Melvin Van Peebles, former South Florida congresswoman Carrie Meek, Dr. Jeremiah Wright, former pastor of President Barack Obamas church in Chicago, and Susan Taylor, former editor in chief of Essence magazine. Another voice of protest was that Abdias do Nascimento, the 95 year old Afro-Brazilian civil rights activist who has been a leader of Brazil's anti-racist movement for more than 60 years. In an open letter to the governments of Cuba and Brazil, Nascimento protested what he characterized as an abuse of Ferrer's rights. These declarations add powerful new voices to the chorus pushing for change on the island, where Afro-Cubans make up at least 62 percent of the 11.4 million people yet are only thinly represented in the top leadership, scientific, academic and other ranks.
