Go to www.blackisbeautifulamsterdam.nlfor more information and an online researchlab. Supermodel by Marlene Dumas is a litho of a beautiful black woman, British top model of Afro-Caribbean descent Naomi Campbell. High-spirited Naomi Campbell, who ranks among the worlds best known super models was the first black model to make the cover of Vogue. She was discovered at the age of 15 and had a successful and trail-blazing career. Despite all the wanted and unwanted attention she receives, she frequently complains about the lack of attention given to black models. "Black models are being sidelined by the major modelling agencies. It is a pity that people don't appreciate black beauty". In her 1994 novel Swan she sardonically writes that the dominant view in Europe is that black girls are better for summer clothes, as if they wear no clothing in winter! Shes militant and she is committed to fighting discrimination against black models. I dont want to quit modelling until I find that black models get equal prominence and recognition by the world media.

Cuba-born and New York-based saxophonist and clarinet player, Paquito D'Rivera has balanced a career in Latin jazz with commissions as a classical composer and appearances with symphony orchestras. Classical New Jersey wrote, "whether playing Bach or post-bop, D'Rivera's mastery of the instruments and their expressive capabilities is unquestionable". D'Rivera inherited his understanding of music from his father, Tito, a classical saxophonist and conductor. At the age of five, D'Rivera began being tutored in musical theory by his father. Within a year, he was playing well enough to be paid as a musician. By the age of seven, he became the youngest musician to endorse a musical instrument (Selmer saxophones). Three years later, he performed with the National Theater Orchestra of Havana. Although he initially played soprano saxophone, D'Rivera switched to the alto after teaching himself to play via the book, Jimmy Dorsey Saxophone Method: A School of Rhythmic Saxophone Playing. Strengthening his knowledge of music and playing techniques, D'Rivera began studying at the Havana Conservatory of Music in 1960. In 1965, D'Rivera became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. After playing the Cuban Army Band, D'Rivera joined with pianist Chu Chu Valdez to found the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna. D'Rivera served as the band's conductor for two years. In 1973, D'Rivera joined with eight members of the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna to form a band ...

Aesthetically Personifying the Feminine in African Sacred Traditions Multi-media Exhibition. In honor of Women's History Month, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) is pleased to present "Wearing Spirit: Aesthetically Personifying the Feminine in African Sacred Traditions" a multi-media exhibition of paintings, sculpture, photography, textile art, video and installations honoring the power of the Feminine present in African Sacred Traditions. While African Sacred Traditions exist within a context of gender duality of masculine/feminine, this exhibition specifically explores the complex fabric of female personalities in indigenous African spirituality. Work in the exhibition captures the essence and power of the female deities, priestesses, and prophets that have served as instruments of balance and grounding within indigenous African spiritual systems and their derivatives. Artists attempt to answer such questions as: Who are the gatekeepers of the spirit and physical realms? Who are the most prominent female divinities? What are the roles of female priestesses and prophets in a contemporary context? How is feminine energy shaping the future of these traditions? This show is an awe-inspiring reflection of the universal essence that is cosmically feminine. It also highlights the traditional West African systems of Akan, Vodun and Yoruba and their Diasporan counteparts along with other rituals and rites-of-passage ceremonies. In 2010, people are ...

Systema Solar is a musical-visual collective from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It 's members, originating from a diversity of territorial and sonorous latitudes have found in the afro Caribbean vibrations a sea of possibilities to renovate the strength and spirit of Colombian music. The objective of the collective is to create audio-visual performances with their own style which they denominate the berbenautika. Influenced by the spirit of the Colombian piko culture (sound systems style performances), the members of the group come together to create, adapt and reinvent different music through improvisation, emphasizing the cult of joy and dance. They recycle the afro Caribbean and folkloric music of Colombia such as cumbia, bullerengue, porro and champeta and fusion these through electronic tools with contemporary rhythms and cultural styles such as hip hop, house, techno, breakbeat, breakdance, turntablism and live video performance. Systema Solar was created at the end of 2006 for a performance at the opening ceremony of the biennial of contemporary art of Medellin MDE07, since then, the group has presented itself all over Colombia and released its first CD in 2009 titled Systema Solar. Come and dance with us, Systema Solar!

From the 1966 Verve album "El Sonido Nuevo" Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr. aka Cal Tjader (July 16, 1925May 5, 1982) was a grammy award winning Latin jazz musician, though he also explored various other jazz idioms. Unlike other American jazz musicians who experimented with the music from Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, he never abandoned it, performing it until his death. Tjader primarily played the vibraphone. He was also accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with numerous musicians from several cultures. He is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing jazz with Latin music is often categorized as "Latin jazz" (or, earlier, "Afro-Cuban jazz"), Tjader's output swung freely between both styles. Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936), is a Grammy Award winning Puerto Rican pianist, bandleader and musician, best known for combining jazz piano and instrumental solos with Latin rhythms.

Played and Inspired by Patrick Bukassa (Copyright) - Soukous (also known as Lingala or Congo, and previously as African rumba) is a musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa. "Soukous" (said to be a derivative of the French word secouer, to shake[1]) was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, and danced to an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term "soukous" has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments. Soukous is called Congo music in West Africa, and Lingala in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania - referring to the Lingala language of the region from where it originated. In the 1980s and early 1990s, a fast-paced style of soukous known as kwassa kwassa named after a popular dance, was popular. A style called ndombolo, also named after a dance, is currently popular. Zouk is a style of rhythmic music originating from the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, St. Lucia, and Dominica. Zouk means "party" or "festival" in the local creole of French. In Africa, it is popular in franco- and lusophone countries. In Europe it is particularly popular in France, and in North America the Canadian province of Quebec. Soukous Origin: In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Congolese musicians fused Congolese and ...

The story behind this video starts on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent. In 1635, two slave ships wrecked there and the African slaves escaped to freedom. They mixed in with the native Caribs, giving birth to a new Afro-Caribbean culture - the Garifuna (Gareefoonah). In the centuries since, the Garifuna migrated and founded villages along the Caribbean coast of Central America. Lonny Shavelson reports from Guatemala. Video Art Work By Gwen Stevenson. Made In May 2009 In Response To A Sense Of Place MCAC (Millennium Court Arts Centre, Portadown, Northern Ireland) Open Submission for Emerging Artists. Humankinds place in the world is assumed to be as a higher life form in a position of dominance in the world. However our place has become totally unstable and destructive to the environment on which it depends. As we become more technologically and ecomonically advanced, we increasingly lose sight of ourselves as members of species within a complex ecology that includes all the worlds life forms which have their own right to place and existence. The quote In her heart she boasts, I sit as queen, I am not a widow and I will not mourn is a Biblical text from Revelations about the destruction of Heaven and Earth. This work suggests humankinds arrogance in our assumption that we are at the apex of the pyramid of life on earth. Like the prostitute of Babylon quoted in the text, we show wanton disregard in the face of environmental destruction. So-called lower life forms such as bees, frogs and birds are all threatened by humankinds domination of the environment. Yet they continue to forage for their place in the world, ironically often relying on manmade and artificial homes, for their continued existence. The work features Jean Blackstock an Afro-Caribbean English woman reciting the quote in English, Spanish and Patois in an Irish landscape. This suggests that even humankinds sense of place ...

Danzones, have their origin in the English Contradanza, that the French brought to Cuba, when they fled the Haitian Revolution. We could say is a mixture of Euroepan dance and Afro-Caribbean dances. It had differente evolutionary stages, as every genre. Because Cubas was close to Mexico, and the commercial relations both countries had, It also became very popular in the states of Veracruz and Mexico City the capital. As a genre is elegant and the philharmonic bands in Oaxaca have a good amount of arrangements, we rarely dance them, they are performed more as entertainemtn music for our parties. ABOUT THE ALBUM: Various Artists "Rare Afro & Caribbean Funk Vol.2" A second mighty batch of rare work from points south the kind of tunes we'd never have tracked down on our own making us even more grateful for a set like this! As before, the music's a blend of obscure African tunes and other bits picked from the Caribbean, the latter of which represents a strongly untapped source of funk from the 70s, finally getting its due in recent years! There's a strong influence on most numbers from American funky 45s .
