POOR MAN NO GET BROTHER:This reissue of various Bucknor recordings made from 1969 - 1975 represents an interesting slice of Nigerian pop music history and culture. Much of the Nigerian music packaged for export to the West has promoted a particular musical style or point of view - hence the popularity (and availability) of recordings by the likes of juju artists King Sunny Ade and Chief Ebenezer Obey, as well as the more controversial Afro-Beat of Fela Kuti. Bucknor, on the other hand, was one of the rank and file, a journeyman who was trying to eke out a living in Nigeria as a popular musician, and who was beholden to local record labels and the demands of the marketplace. Even over this relatively brief six year period, playing first with a group he called The Assembly, and then with The Revolution, Bucknor displays a stylistic diversity reflecting everything from pure commercial opportunism to heartfelt political and moral exhortations. Regardless, Bucknor's individual talent almost always shines through. He's a strong, convincing vocalist in the American soul tradition, and had obviously listened closely to the likes of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam Cooke. In fact, Bucknor had a direct connection to Western pop music influences, because he studied in New York City at Columbia University in the early 60's, pursuing a liberal arts curriculum and taking courses in ethno-musicology.

FULL LESSON: su.pr Blues guitar lessons: www.truefire.com Over the years I've had the pleasure of teaching at various workshops in the company of some fabulous blues guitarists, including Paul Rishell, Steve James and Duke Robillard, among others. I've always soaked up as much as I could from these experiences, realizing early on that as long as no one who was paying me to teach realized just how much I was actually learning myself, I was pretty much sitting on so much velvet. The thing I've always envied about these guys is their hands-on connection to the past. Steve's got stories about backing up Furry Lewis onstage in Memphis in the early '70s. Duke told me once how he got called up to sit in with Muddy Waters, while Freddie King was already onstage too, and Freddie proceeded to glower at Duke the entire time for messing with his own Muddy moment. "And Freddie was a big guy!" laughed Duke. But the best of all are Paul Rishell's stories about backing up Howlin' Wolf in Boston, also in the early '70s. After one session, one of the other musicians asked Wolf if he had any words of wisdom for a young, up and coming bluesman. Wolf looked the afro'd and dashiki'd guitarist up and down and growled, "Yeah! Throw them pedals in the river on the way to the barber shop!" So I wish the things I am about to tell you, I learned from hanging with Robert Lockwood Jr., sitting in with Roosevelt Sykes, and catching Magic Sam at his incendiary Ann Arbor Blues Festival appearance in the ...

"Quiet As Kept: CHANGE" ~ February 27th 2009 multi-media ritual performance conceived by: Ulysses Jenkins. "Quiet As Kept: CHANGE" is a continuation of the expressions of the group of artist who were presented in the winter of 2008 at an artist panel at the Getty Museum entitled: "African American Avant Garde". This panel reunited four African American Avant Garde artist who collaborated during the 1970's and 1980's in African American artist groups known as "Studio 'Z' and Othervisions Studio before going onto individual careers of national and international importance. Therefore "Quiet As Kept: CHANGE" is a performative action, which conceptually makes a timely connection with the African Diaspora. Wherein, this performance work shares with it's audience the Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American cross cultural connections of espiritual and musica. This work contains the musical and experimental cultural connections of the sister cities of: Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and Los Angeles, California and Northern California (Bay Area) USA.

At the Percussion Academy camp, these kids were taught by Hugh Humphrey and Joe Agu how to play a complex rhythms in just two days. The rhythm patern they're playing is known as the West African 6x8 beat, which can be heard in the music of Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago. In Trinidad especially this rhythm is called 'Naningo". When I first heard the rhythm played by Hugh, it reminded me of the beat I have always been familiar with in "Igbo" land in the eastern Nigeria. A few years ago when I visited the caribbeans, I was lucky to be granted a permission to view a national archive, and I was able to confirm the make up of the ethnic groups that were brought from Africa to farm the sugar cane plantations. The Igbo's were one of these groups. Since I speak the Igbo language, Naningo sounded familiar and I thought that there's a connection here, I could not find another way to translate Naningo but say "Na ani Igbo"which mean in Igbo land. I am the one playing the large bell, which is an instrument found in Igbo land. In this practice session the kids range in age from 7 to 11 years, they learned the history, geography, the culture of hand drumming of African diaspora and more important how to place the hands on the drum. We are very proud of these students that were able to learn such a complex rhythms. We look forward to helping them acquire the type of percussive skill necessary to play in any kind of bands, from Brazilian Jazz, Funk, Pop, Hip-Hop, Samba, Salsa or ...

Drumming class at a camp held last year. The students learn the 6x8 rhythms from the teachers Joe Agu and Hugh Humphrey. These kids as well as adults are learning the roots of rhythms, where the drumming culture originated and they are taught to recorganize the various beats that are common in Afro music of the diaspora. Videos of percussionists from various Afro communitites in Africa, Brazil or Cuba are shown to give them an example. Participants are taught geograhic location and the history of the various ethnic groups. You can see the improvement of the students at the end of the class when they performed as a group. They also come away from this program with confidence knowing their connection to popular music.
