This film is a musical portrait of street life in urban West Africa. It follows the birth of Hiplife music in Accra, Ghana, a mix of various African musical forms and American hip hop. Archival footage and hip hop music videos are remixed with interviews and the daily lives of rap artists. We follow Reggie Rockstone, the Godfather of Hiplife in the founding of the musical movement, as well as the Mobile Boys a group of aspiring rap artists as they try to make it in the music business. With humor and personality these characters move across the political and musical landscape of urban Ghana. Reviews "...thoughtful and visually exciting at the same time. It is a musical documentary that gives a powerful sense of life in contemporary Africa." - John Akomfrah, Filmmaker "...cleverly portrays contemporary West African expressive culture. It is especially important because it shows the importance of Pan-Africanism and African Diasporic artistic and political connections to people in Africa." - Chinua Achebe, Writer "This film reveals for American and European audiences what is happening in the streets of Africa. It's a really powerful film that documents a vibrant, yet sadly underreported part of the rap world." - Link Landvik-Larsen, Writer "LIVING THE HIPLIFE captures the textures of West African music in a visually compelling bricolage. Its vivid characters have ambitions of fame and fortune that are contrasted with archival footage and the geographies of afro ...

December 6, 1976 at Brookdale hospital in Brooklyn, Taiwan "Mr. Fingaz" Green was born. He grew up in St. Albans, Queens NY. At 11 years old he was given a toy keyboard. There began his passion for music. With hard work and classic training and he was awarded music diplomas from the Associated Board of Royal Schools and graduated with a masters. During his time at Bayside High School Mr. Fingaz was the first afro American to perform in the annual piano recital and played Mozart's sonata in c major to a standing ovation. He was a trailblazer competing in youth competitions and always gaining first prize. Around 16 his interest then changed to sports. He didn't connect with his love of music again until he went to college. During his time at Queensbourgh College a friend of his heard some of his song ideas and His music and invited him to his studio to lay it down. After a long session Mr. Fingaz knew what he wanted to do from that day forward. He then did whatever necessary to get all equipment needed to pursue his career as a producer. With determination and self training, (and of course some assistance from a close few) he began to create his music. He shopped his music at local barbershops and friends to create a buzz. As luck would have it he ran into an old friend with connections to Irv Gotti. At this time Irv was an A&R at Def Jam. He got a meeting with Irv, during that meeting Irv said he wasnt moved by any of his music but he was impressed by the musicianship. At ...

Ojalá by Sofía Rei Koutsovitis with Tutuma Social Club members Yuri Juarez (guitar), and Freddy 'Huevito' Lobatón (cajón). Sofía Rei Koutsovitis, one of the most versatile and in-demand singers on the New York music scene (All About Jazz), is a Buenos Aires native, a vocalist and a composer who mixes and elegantly fuses South American rhythms with a jazz aesthetic in a unique and extremely seductive way. Singing in Spanish, Portuguese or English, Sofia's voice is so graceful as sophisticated and reflects her immersion in modern and progressive jazz while also responding to the pull of ancestry and the appeal of organic, pan-musical connections. Her own project is grounded in traditional South American rhythms such as chacarera, zamba and vidala from Argentina, Afro-peruvian festejo and lando, Afro-Uruguayan candombe, Colombian cumbia and bullerengue and other Brazilian genres that merge involving jazz harmonies and rich improvisations. Her ensemble produces a range of textures as diverse as the cultural roots of its members, an international cast that includes some of the most exiting young talent from North and South America. Her debut CD, Ojalá, received great critical acclaim and was chosen a top 10 album of 2006 by the Jazz Journalists Association. A follow-up CD Sube Azul is being released in Europe by the label World Village (Harmonia Mundi) in the Summer of 2009.

The marimba is a vivid legacy of African presence in Latin America. But only on the Pacific coast of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador does it keep its close connections to a strongly African culture. Hailing from small towns along the Colombian coast, the seasoned women singers of Cantadoras del Pacífico raise their voices to the accompaniment of marimba and drums, performing their distinctive styles of music known collectively as currulao. Here, they perform the piece Mirando. Cantadoras del Pacífico can be heard on the Smithsonian Folkways album "iarriba Suena Marimba! Currulao Marimba Music from Colombia by Grupo Naidy". Really, I only put this up because I'm in it...with great seats...and a bushy 'stache and huge Afro on my head. With me in the house, instead of the chandeliers, they needed a disco ball. Forum Bowl was my home bowling center for many years (seen in one of my "Me Bowling" videos), so I had connections to get great seats. Don't blink or you'll miss me. LOL! Brazilian Soul Crew's (BSC) talented trio of Claudio Mansur, Edground and Alexandre Zee emerges to spread the vibe of quality music and its referential sub-genres of contemporary to vanguard, Brazilian, nu jazz, chill beats, r-grooves, Latin-Afro beats, deeply-jazzy and soulful house, all in the framework of their unique signature groove-laced harmonies. The seed of Brazilian Soul Crew roots bore fruit when Claudio, Edground and Zee met in Taubaté, a small historic city in the Paraíba valley, eighty miles North-East of São Paulo, Brazil. Edground, the Dj extradoinaire, and well read journalist who counts one of his blessings as ownership in world-respected Grooveland Music, a label exposing the soul of Brazil and its many intra-ethnic connections. Claudio "the radio show" man, did just that in the 90's, when his infectious live mixes were heard on three radio stations. Zee, the technical brain of the trio, stems from the world of drivers, patches, workarounds, software and glitches. His religiosity to details gives us the fresh, crisp and warm Brazilian flavors that embodies each of their productions. Since formalizing their relationship as a group, they have released original gems on Conya Records and Symple Soul. My secondary education was at Arhovworien Grammer School, Arhovworien; Afisare Secondary Scool, Affisare, Ughelli North; and Ekapkamre Secondary School, Ekapkamre, Ughelli North, all in Delta State. I got my Nation Diploma (OND) at The Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori; and I'm now in my final year (HND) at The Akwa-Ibom State Polytechnic studying Business Administraon and Management. My Family I am from a family of 5: 2 step brothers, 1 from my mum and the other from my dad. My mum is from Oviri Olomu, Ughelli in Delta State. Music Career I love Music right from childhood, and I like singing. My music career started when I gained admission in the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori. I joined the Joint Christian Campus Fellowship where I joined the mass choir. There, I met other singers, musicians, and was further inspired by their lives. The most important thing that movivated me to do my debut album is God: the miracles he did for me and the mighty things he did motivated me to Praise Him. That was why I choose my title track, Oghene me meaning "God is good". In Oghene ME, tracks: Ogheneme, They that put their trust in the Lord, The Name of the Lord, Whenever you see me, The road is narrow, De me ruwe.
