astore.amazon.com Documentary When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head! Director Jeff Stilson's camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn't always benefit the black community and little Lola's question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

More info at www.stevebloomphoto.com Photographer Steve Bloom makes a fascinating journey into the world of Nairobi and its shopkeepers. In this film he discusses what inspired him to write and photograph his book, Trading Places - The Merchants of Nairobi. This photographic portrait of the merchants of Nairobi offers an encounter with a community rarely glimpsed by outsiders. Steve Bloom has ventured away from the centre of this dynamic African metropolis into neighbourhoods where malls and supermarkets have not yet penetrated. Here people buy their daily necessities locally, from small traders in their communities. Shopkeepers decorate their hoardings with hand-painted signs. The results are often delightfully quirky an authentic form of popular street graphics. Store façades are painted with images of goods of all kinds, from light bulbs to cuts of meat. Affirmative messages abound. Beauty is your birthright proclaims the Eclipse Hair Salon. Never give up, urges the Bora-Bora Bar; Life continues. More than one shack hotel wittily declares itself Hotel Hilton. Ghetto life is not easy says the façade of Abdalla Store. Indeed not: life here is very hard. Yet in frank interviews, ordinary Kenyans display extraordinary goodness and charity. Their priorities are faith, family, love and community. This book is a tribute to the creativity and generosity of the human spirit. It is also timely, for it depicts a world that is changing fast. Hand-painted hoardings are rapidly being obliterated by advertisements for mobile phone networks and other expanding brands. While that is good news for some of the people we meet here, it adds an extra poignancy to this celebration of the resourcefulness and resilience of their lives. 138 photographs 144 Pages Thames & Hudson

Chris Rock's Good Hair is really a social study (a comical social study) on the relationship black women have with their hair and the entire (and quite lucrative) black industry in the US The movie opened in the US on October 9th, but only opened on October 16th in Canada. === Here's the link to the first video I did 5 days before Good Hair opened in Canada: www.youtube.com I went to see the last showing of the evening last night and I wanted to let you know if my impressions where the same as they were before seeing the movie and if I liked it or not. Chris Rock asked a lot of great questions, but there are a few I wish he had, but didn't. The topic of black women and their hair is extremely sensitive and a complex one and Good Hair bring this to life. I love the fact that Chris Rock has a number of celebrities appearances like: Nia Long, Eve, Ice T, Dr. Mia Angelou, Reverend Al Sharpton, Reven Simone, Alicia Bridges who has Alopecia and who is bald, Vibez hair salon Atlanta Jason Griggers, Melissa Ford Video Vixen, Stacey London. Find out if I recommend to see or pass on Chris Rock's Good Hair. www.eatsmartagesmart.com Chris Rock has crossed borders with his new documentary Good Hair. African American and black women in the US have had violent reactions to this new documentary revealing all the ins and outs of the lucrative weave, extension, wig and hair piece business, but many black women feel Chris Rock has sold them short. Here in Canada, the documentary Good Hair opens one week later on Friday, October 16th in a handful of cities, but the reaction from black women (with and without extensions is already quite violent. This is my reaction to Good Hair before seeing is and I will do another video when it hit theater on Friday. Some of the celebrities featured in the movie include: Nia Long, Eve, Ice T, Dr. Mia Angelou, Reverend Al Sharpton, Reven Simone, Alicia Bridges who has Alopecia and who is bald, Vibez hair salon Atlanta Jason Griggers, Melissa Ford Video Vixen, Stacey London (chris rock) (chris rock on oprah) (chris rock on the view) (chris rock good hair) (chris rock good hair documentary) (chris rock good hair reaction) (chris rock african american women) (chris rock black hair industry) (chris rock good hair backlash)

Director Jeff Stilsons camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughters question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesnt always benefit the black community and little Lolas question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

This video was created back in the day when i was a student at Wits Tech (aka University of Johannesburg). Paula Scher came to give us a Design Indaba workshop on branding. We worked in teams on creating a brand as a mini project. My team worked on an idea for a local South African hairdresser called "Hairstile". Hairstile would be created as a chain salon throughout southern Africa and would incorporate a vernacular look, with a modern touch. I created this video as a projection to be shown within salons for when you are waiting for your hair to be done. Group: Keegan Murray, Hayley Junkin, Jono Garrett, Brad Glossop.

www.sheldeez.com When it comes to Beauty 4 Ashes godhead products, there is much debate within the hair stylist community on which is the best product. In the United Kingdom, most stylists of African American Hair or Bi-racial hair prefer to use their godhead™ Max Moisture shampoo and conditioner on their clients hair, because it has great detangling capabilities, can loosen tight curl patterns, and is filled with over 22 all natural ingredients, such as jojoba, shea, vitamin e, and coconut oil. All these nourish the scalp and grow hair. However, in the United States, most hair stylists prefer godhead™ Silky Smooth shampoo and conditioner. The godhead Silky Smooth system contains a vitamin-rich and hair softening sunflower and coconut soap base that is great for damaged hair. Silky Smooth also has a hair-thickening conditioner that can be used as a deep conditioner treatment. It works wonders on chemically treated hair by infusing the scalp with vitamins and the hair strands with natural oils. It produces a rich lather that most customers like. No matter which godhead™ system you choose, both will give your hair that salon quality look, brilliance, length, and shine. You find their products at wwwdiscoverb4acom

www.sheldeez.com Bar none, the absolute best hair salon in Northern Virginia. When it comes to styling, Black hair textures present some unique challenges. As diverse as our skin tones from darkest ebony and butterscotch cream to milky white and everything in between Black hair runs the gamut from sleek and straight to extremely curly. And having high yellow skin, sometimes a result of racially mixed parentage, does not guarantee silky straight tresses. Black women with skin as dark and smooth as a midsummer moonless night can have hair completely void of kinks or curls bone straight and down to the waist. While light skinned sisters, who could easily pass for White, defy logic with extremely kinky curls. But hair of all types is simply a result of genetics; and straight, wavy, curly and extremely kinky hair can occur in all races. Historically, Black women and men, blessed with straighter hair and lighter skin tones were highly esteemed and said to have good hair, while those with kinky hair were shunned. However, in the early 1900s, Madame CJ Walker, an African American laundress, dreamed about a mixture which would cause her damaged, extremely curly hair to grow. She later developed the first chemical relaxer, which gave Black women with kinky hair the ability to straighten and lengthen their natural locks.
