Edmar Castaneda is the sort of musician who isn't afraid to challenge the established order. He's carving out a place for himself in Latin jazz on an instrument you don't often hear in his chosen genre: the Colombian harp. He's adapted intricate traditional fingerpicking techniques to play jazz melodies along with the Afro-Cuban tumbao (bass line). As you can see and hear for yourself in this Tiny Desk Concert, he can switch between rural Colombian dance music and jazz with a twist of his wrist. Literally. His musical vision is so invigorating that he's gaining fans like NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera, with whom Castaneda has performed. His Web site shows him constantly on the road as a guest artist with other forward thinkers, or with his latest touring trio, which consists of Castaneda, a drummer and a trombonist. Castaneda recently parked himself behind Bob Boilen's desk and crafted a transporting mix of tradition and improvisation. Chances are, you've never heard anything like it.

Machito (December 3, 1909 April 15, 1984), born Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo in Havana, Cuba, was an influential Latin jazz musician. [1] Machito played a huge role in the history of Latin jazz. His bands of the 1940s, especially the band named the Afro-Cubans, were among the first to fuse Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz improvisation. Machito was the front man, singer, conductor, and maraca player of the Afro-Cubans and its successors. Machito's brother-in-law Mario Bauza, the musical director, influenced Machito to hire jazz-oriented arrangers. The son of a cigar manufacturer, Machito became a professional musician in Cuba in his teens before he emigrated to America in 1937 as a vocalist with La Estrella Habanera. He worked with several Latin artists and orchestras in the late '30s, recording with the then-dominant Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat. After an earlier, aborted attempt to launch a band with Bauza, Machito founded the Afro-Cubans in 1940, taking on Bauza the following year as music director where he remained for 35 years. Machito's son Mario Grillo later took over the position. In 1983, he won a Grammy Award in the Best Latin Recording category for Machito & His Salsa Big Band '82. More recently, the song "Mambo Mucho Mambo" has featured on the sound track for the game Grand Theft Auto Vice City. In 2005, the 1957 album Kenya was added to the list of albums in '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. Machito died during a concert in London, England in 1984 ...

Tags: Ethnification

There are several types of ethnification. I shall mention some of these: - First, a nation could be ethnified even when the people of the nation live in their ancestral territory; there are at least three variants of this: a) when a people are subjected to culturocide, ie systematic liquidation of their culture, as happened to the indigenous people in the New World -- the Americas, Australia, and to a certain extent in Latin America. The original settlers, some social scientists refer to them as First Nations, are treated as strangers in their own homeland. b) the tendency to treat a people as non-nationals or outsiders, even when they live in their ancestral homeland as in the case of Bosnian Muslims. There are Croatians, Serbs and Bosnians. If Muslim is a designation to be used in the case of Bosnians others should be called Catholics and Orthodox, based on their religious identity. But by designating Bosnians as Muslims they are deterritorialized, denationalized and thereby ethnified. c) those whose ancestral homeland is vivisected between states. There are numerous examples in this category. Poland was once ethnified by being divided between different states. The classic example now is the Kurds. They are over 25 million people, divided between 5 different states and they do not have a national state. Or consider the Basque people who are either French or Spanish. There is no Basque state. The Nagas are divided between India and Burma (Myanmar). The second variety of ...

Cuba-born and New York-based saxophonist and clarinet player, Paquito D'Rivera has balanced a career in Latin jazz with commissions as a classical composer and appearances with symphony orchestras. Classical New Jersey wrote, "whether playing Bach or post-bop, D'Rivera's mastery of the instruments and their expressive capabilities is unquestionable". D'Rivera inherited his understanding of music from his father, Tito, a classical saxophonist and conductor. At the age of five, D'Rivera began being tutored in musical theory by his father. Within a year, he was playing well enough to be paid as a musician. By the age of seven, he became the youngest musician to endorse a musical instrument (Selmer saxophones). Three years later, he performed with the National Theater Orchestra of Havana. Although he initially played soprano saxophone, D'Rivera switched to the alto after teaching himself to play via the book, Jimmy Dorsey Saxophone Method: A School of Rhythmic Saxophone Playing. Strengthening his knowledge of music and playing techniques, D'Rivera began studying at the Havana Conservatory of Music in 1960. In 1965, D'Rivera became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. After playing the Cuban Army Band, D'Rivera joined with pianist Chu Chu Valdez to found the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna. D'Rivera served as the band's conductor for two years. In 1973, D'Rivera joined with eight members of the Orchestra Cubana de Musica Moderna to form a band ...

Dilanga is made up of musicians who spearhead Londons Latin and Afro-Cuban music scene. The word dilanga in Cuban Ki-congo means 'times past'. The choice of name reflects the Afro-Cuban traditions from which the group draws knowledge and inspiration. True to the essence of rumba, Dilanga's style comes from injecting elements of our diverse musical backgrounds into the traditional form. Our performance contains an energy and exuberance which is both visually and musically playful.
