This song was a collaboration of sorts, between Roy Ayers and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. BLACK FAMILY first appeared on the Roy Ayers album called LOTS OF LOVE in 1983. He released the album on his UNO MELODIC label. This album is very hard to track down, however it was re-released in the late 80's on an album called "Drive", and again in 2005 on the Roy Ayers compilation disc called "My Vibes" the best of the Uno Melodic Years. Basically, A re-issue of "Lots of Love", with eight un-released cuts. (This is where I got this copy from) The track Black Family, was written by Roy Ayers and Dwayne Perdue (of the BB Q's). You can hear that it is done in the typical Fela Afro beat style. There is a definite link here to the song that he and Fela collaborated on in 1980. Fela first released the song AFRICA, CENTER OF THE WORLD in 1980 on his album Music of Many Colours, (celluloid) Roy played vibraphones on this epic 17 and a half minute version, which is hypnotic and hard hitting lyrically. Well worth tracking down. The next year 1981, Roy Ayers released the same song...much shorter in length on his album called "Africa, Centre of the World" (Polydore). This verion can be found on youtube. Black Family is a spin off of this song. You will notice the similar, but toned down lyrics on this version. I performed for the second time this wonderful classic penned in 1961 by Freddie King. All the british blues lovers, remember the "Hideaway"version on "Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton" (Decca Rec.-1966) Freddie King also known as Freddy King and "The Texas Cannonball" (September 3, 1934 - December 28, 1976), was an influential Afro-American blues guitarist and singer. He perfected his own guitar style based on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first bluesmen to have a multi-racial backing band on stage with him at live performances. Freddie King had a twenty year recording career and became established as an influential guitarist for the mid 1960s UK blues revivalists such as Eric Clapton, Chicken Shack and Peter Green and had an intuitive style, often creating guitar parts similar to a second vocal line, using the open-string sound of Texas blues guitar and the raw, screaming tones of West Side Chicago blues. One aspect of Freddy's style that should be mentioned is his distinction from the two other "Kings", BB and Albert..Freddy's style was more aggressive and creative in improvisation,where Albert relied on a battery of licks, wound in different ways.. When I was in Central and South America, I found out that the song of the local coachmen expressed a quite different content than the one of their colleagues in Italian opera or Greek operetta. In Europe they praise the beauty of nature, the carefree life, the escape from ordinary. In this series of three videos, I suggest songs from México, Cuba and Argentina. In these countries the coachmen testify of a desperate, unfair, hard yet nostalgic way of living. The coachman from Cuba lodges a social protest and a lamentation, but he turns his uneasiness into a celebration full of rythm and colour. This is the side of Cuba that I adore. To put it in Antonio Porchia´s way: what the cuban coachman knows is that ´´ someone, is someone while with other people; someone alone, is noone``. In the internet, I found some other lyrics written for this ´´guajira`` probably by the band Quilapayun. They are 101% marxist and are printed below. They denounce the english colonialism-imperialism (pick whichever word suits you). Ibrahim sings of course a similar but milder version, suitable for our globalized ears. This tune is considered a classic in Cuba. It was composed by Ñico Saquito. The huge sonero Ibrahim Ferrer sings, este viejito que nos mira desde el cielo y me hace siempre llorar. I miss him a lot.
