Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that extends across a couple decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his duties on keyboards, organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies, Ramsey Lewis, George Clinton, the P-Funk All Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was (Not Was), and Too Short. With significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas "Bubz" Fiddler (another member of the extended P-Funk family), Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler. Although the record didn't fare well commercially, it was a solid update of '70s funk with modern production sensibilities. In 2002, Amp issued a 12" called Basementality on the Genuine label. Featuring a remix from close associate Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), the record was an even split between modern soul and funky club music with Fiddler's talents boldly displayed. The Love and War single came out the following year, and the full-length Waltz of a Ghetto Fly saw release in January 2004. Another solo album, Afro Strut, was released in the UK in 2006; Play It Again Sam licensed it for US release a year later. Two years later, Fiddler and Sly & Robbie kicked off the Strut label's collaboration-oriented Inspiration Information series.

"Based around saxophonist James Plunky Branch, Oneness of Juju was the second incarnation of the Afrocentric creative jazz group Juju who recorded two albums for the Strata East label in the early '70s. Along with new members and new instruments, including the introduction of a drum kit to the African and Afro-Cuban percussion section, a new name was adopted to reflect the direction of the group. While Juju was often compared to Pharoah Sanders and active in the loft jazz scene in New York, Oneness of Juju incorporated more populist R&B elements and introduced vocals to the new group sound as well. The sound of this incarnation, more akin to the Ohio Players and Kool & the Gang at this point, was documented on two recordings, 1975's African Rhythms and Space Jungle Luv in 1976. Joseph "Amp" Fiddler, originally a keyboardist from Detroit, is a funk and soul musician who has worked with Enchantment, the Dramatics, George Clinton, Moodyman, Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Fishbone and Maxwell. Along with his brother, Budz, he realsed the album Mr Fiddler in 1990 on Elektra. His debut solo album Waltz of a Ghetto Fly was released in 2004. The new album'Afro Strut' is the follow up to that record and a sign that his assured and open-minded approach to his own sound has engendered a stylistic leap forward, creating in the process a diverse and ambitious second album. As a man who has achieved almost every goal he has set himself, whether it be becoming a multi instrumentalist talent, joining George Clinton's Funkadelic, or developing a base for like minded musical luminaries to collaborate and create, it was always to be expected. 'Waltz...' was more of a vibe, a full stop on a long period of his life to that point and a drawing together of unfinished songs and feelings from his youth. 'Afro Strut' was to be the fresh start that sees Amp able to look further forward as well as back to his roots, and as a result has the feel of a more fully-realised vision. The array of collaborators and contributors to the record further emphasises this approach. Opener 'Faith' sets the standard with Amp joined by Raphael Saadiq on a timelessly deep ode to spirituality of a different kind. 1980年リリースされたEP盤「NFCのテーマ」より。 NFC＝ニューヨーク・ファイヤー・クラッカーズの略称。あの「シクラメンのかほり」を生みだした小椋佳が、1980年にプロデュースした伝説のキッズソウルグループ。謎の覆面グループであるため、男女比や年齢などは不明。声を聴く限り、10代前半の子どもたちが中心だと思われる。ただし、ジャクソン・ファイブのようにキャラクターを前面に押し出すのではなく、逆にキャラ色をあえて消した覆面グループ的な売り出し方が、非常に戦略的。 かつて70年代歌謡を支えた有名サウンドメーカーが、Dr.ドラゴン＆オリエンタル・エキスプレスやサム・クラート・オーケストラを名乗ったような、いわば所属レコード会社との関係によるシガラミ的な解釈も可能。 本作は、なんといっても「あ〜いうえお・か〜きくけこ〜」とヤマト言葉の原型ともいえるリリックが独創的かつアヴァンギャルド。そのバックで、やや厚みはないものの、流麗なストリングスの響きがうねりまくる。稚拙なボーカルの背景で一流のサウンドが絡むというスタイルは、今となっては日本の70年代歌謡ディスコを象徴していたとも・・・。 90年代に一世を風靡した伝説のキッズソウルグループ、FOLDERファンにもおすすめの一曲。
